Jenkins Doors and Windows History

The business traditions at Jenkins Doors and Windows were forged through hard work, quality products, and excellent service.

Jenkins Doors and Windows was founded in 1927 when Joe Jenkins purchased Amarillo Mantel Brick and Tile Company. The company manufactured decorative concrete brick and hearth tile used in building fireplaces. Shortly after acquiring the company, Mr. Jenkins changed the name to Jenkins Mantel Brick and Tile and added clay brick, common brick, and hollow building tile to the product line.

After the stock market crash in 1929 and the depression in 1930, the market for decorative fireplaces and clay products deteriorated. In order to survive, the company added additional products and services including metal doors and windows, lockers, chalk and tack board, partitions, and many other specialty items. Mr. Jenkins also began installing ceramic tile, marble, resilient flooring, and acoustical products. The manufacturing of concrete fireplaces was discontinued in the mid 1930's.

With a broadened product base, the company was able to survive through the great depression and was well prepared to furnish products for the construction and expansion of industrial plants during the war years of 1941 - 1945. At the end of World War II, Al N. Jenkins returned home from service and joined his father in the family business. They changed the name to Jenkins Brick and Supply and continued to grow the inventories of metal windows and doors, ceramic and acoustic tile, and other specialty building products. In 1947 the company expanded to its current location at 820 W 6th.

In 1959 Joe Jenkins retired and Al Jenkins took over. For over 50 years Al Jenkins continued to successfully build on what his father had started. During that time the company's focus moved primarily into the residential door and window market. A window manufacturing plant was added in 1962, as well as a pre-hung door facility in 1972. Both are still functioning today. The name was changed to Jenkins Doors and Windows in the early 80's to more accurately reflect the nature of the business.

On April 1, 2000, Anthony Ledwig, a longtime employee of Jenkins, purchased the company from Al N Jenkins and proudly continues its tradition of excellence, providing builders and homeowners with a wide variety of custom built doors and windows.

After more than 80 years in business, Jenkins is a company that realizes that customers want quality, service, and dependability. We strive to offer that to every customer, every time. That is how Jenkins Doors and Windows has managed, not only to survive, but to thrive as a small company. And it is this philosophy that makes Jenkins the kind of company that folks in the Panhandle respect and turn to, year after year.
